Hugh J. Giffin was born in Fairmont, WV, the son of architect H. F. Giffin and Grace Jenkins Giffin. Giffin attended Fairmont Senior High School before earning a diploma from the Greenbrier Military School. He acquired his architectural education at the University of Pennsylvania, completing a B. Arch. in 1937 and winning the Frank Miles Day Prize his senior year. Giffin worked briefly for his father before and shortly after completing his Penn degree. From 1937 to 1947 he worked as an architectural and structural designer for several firms in the Philadelphia area and then, in 1947, organized his own firm, with an office in Rosemont, PA. Among his works are: Old Stone Presbyterian Church (Lewisburg, WV, 1952) and St. Marks Methodist Church (Easton, MD, 1961).
