Biographical / Historical
Peter F. Arfaa (1935-2022) was adopted out of a Jewish orphanage in Germany just before the start of World War II and raised by his adopted parents in Tehran, Iran. He attended St. Edmond's School in Canterbury, England before enrolling at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his B.A. (1959) and B.Arch. (1962). Arfaa stayed in Philadelphia and went on to work for Vincent G. Kling & Partners, Montgomery, Bishop & Arnold, and Murphy, Levy, Wurman before founding Friday Architects with colleagues Donald Matzkin and David Slovic in 1970. Arfaa served as Executive Director of the American Institute of Architects, Philadelphia Chapter from 1974 to 1979, and then returned to successful practice, both with partners and independently. He closed his final practice, Peter F. Arfaa, Architects, in 2012. Arfaa was a member of the Drexel University Architecture faculty from 1972-2011.
