Biographical / Historical
Born: 4/1/1924, Died: 4/13/2002
Philadelphia native Nick James Chimes moved to Columbia, South Carolina with his family while in high school. His studies at the University of South Carolina were interrupted by military service in World War II, but he completed a B. S. in civil engineering there in 1948. Chimes then went on to study architecture at the University of Florida, earning a B. Arch. in 1951. Before founding his own architectural firm (Nick James Chimes & Associates) in Philadelphia in 1963, Chimes worked in the office of Vincent Kling. Chimes returned to the Kling office in the 1980s, and retired in 1993. He resided at the Ben Franklin House at the time of his death.
Chimes joined the national AIA in 1960 and was a member of Philadelphia Chapter.
