Biographical / Historical
Henry D. Gilpin (1801-1860) was a lawyer and statesman who served as the U.S. Attorney General under President Martin Van Buren. Born in Lancaster, England, to Philadelphia paper manufacturer Joshua Gilpin and Mary Dilworth, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1819 and was admitted to the bar in 1822. Gilpin was appointed United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in 1831 and Solicitor of the United States Treasury in 1837. He was appointed Attorney General of the United States on January 11, 1840, by President Van Buren and served until March of 1841. Gilpin died in Philadelphia on January 29, 1860. Gilpin was a member of the American Philosophical Society, President of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, trustee of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and a board member of the Bank of the United States at various points in his life.
