Biographical / Historical
General John A. Logan (1826-1886) was an American soldier and politician who served in the Mexican-American War and as a Union general and third Commander-in-Chief during the Civil War. He also served the state of Illinois as state Representative, U.S. Representative, and U.S. Senator. He ran for Vice President as the running mate of James G. Blaine in the 1884 presidential election. He helped to create Memorial Day.
