Biographical / Historical
Born: 5/17/1902, Died: 5/13/1983
Born in Philadelphia to Augusta V. and William F. Shepherd, Samuel G. Shepherd graduated from West Philadelphia High School in 1921 and continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania, gaining his B.Arch in 1925, followed by the M.Arch in 1927. There followed a number of years in which he worked for other architects, including William M. Stanton (until 15 April 1927), Thomas, Martin & Kirkpatrick (1927-1928), Ritter & Shay (1928-1929), Karcher & Smith (1929-1930), John T. Windrim (1930-1933), Harry Sternfeld (1933-1934), the Philadelphia City Planning Department (1934), and the Atlantic Refining Co. (1934-1946). He also was employed as chief designer for E. P. Simon (1946), E. A. Stopper, Davis & Poole, Heacock & Platt, and Gleeson & Mulrooney (1955). In 1955 Shepherd became Architect and Supervisor of Design and Construction for the Philadelphia Housing Authority, a position in which he remained until his retirement in 1970.
