George A. Robbins was born in Philadelphia, the son of George S. and Virginia (Coles) Robbins. He attended Haverford School and graduated from St. Georges School in Newport, RI, in 1916, then received his B.A. in English from Princeton University in 1920. He then turned to architecture, graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with his B.S. in Architecture in 1923. By 1922 he was employed by Stewardson & Page, followed by 1923 to 1927 with Paul P. Cret. In 1927 he launched his own practice. His early works included the Wayne Harkness residence in Jenkintown, PA (1930), alteration to Christ Church Hospital at 49th Street and Belmont Avenue (1933), and the sexton's residence, Christ Episcopal Church, 206 to 208 Filbert Street (1932). In later years he specialized in the restoration of colonial properties in Philadelphia and prepared measured drawings for the Philadelphia Historical Commission. Robbins joined the AIA in 1930 and was also a member of its Philadelphia Chapter. He achieved emeritus status in the AIA in 1968.
